The Center for Breastfeeding courses are indispensable for
professionals working in the area of breastfeeding and human lactation. This
includes physicians, nurses, nutritionists, public health providers, educators,
lactation consultants, hospital staff, public health/WIC personnel, childbirth
educators, public health nurses, nurses who work with pregnant or postpartum
women, OB/GYNs, visiting nurses, pediatricians, family practice physicians,
breastfeeding advocates, midwives, perinatal outreach workers... To

This comprehensive, evidence-based, breastfeeding management course includes practical skills, theoretical foundations and competency verification. Technical issues are explored within the context of counseling the mother in the hospital and in public health and community settings. This course prepares participants for professional work helping mothers and babies: this program trains participants how to gain insight into clients' problems, with a strong focus on counseling skills.
The CLC offers continuing education
credits for RNs (45 contact hours through ANCC), RDs (45 CPEUs through CDR),
IBCLCs (45.0L CERPs through IBLCE) and Nurse-Midwives (3.9 CEUs through ACNM), 3
college credits (MCH 330, only for students at Union Institute and University).
The Lactation Counselor Certificate Training Program (CLC) is accredited by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice and the ANCC Commission on Accreditation as a Nursing Skills Competency Program. It is also approved through the Accreditation and Approval Review Committee (AARC) on Education in Human Lactation and Breastfeeding. AARC, jointly sponsored by ILCA and IBLCE, is the formal accreditation and approval body for education in the lactation consultant profession.

This interactive course provides IBCLCs and CLCs with the opportunity to earn advanced certification in lactation management while verifying the insight, knowledge and skills essential to the development and implementation of management strategies for complex problems related to breastfeeding and human lactation. maternal child health focuses on providing services to pregnant women to
encourage the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. Strategies
for providing anticipatory guidance and support in order to prevent
breastfeeding problems and to address barriers to breastfeeding, and to
enable women to overcome any perceived or actual breastfeeding

case finding, reporting, noting change and documenting the assessment.
Major topics covered in the course are normal and gross anatomy of

scales, breast and maternal assessment, lexicon of assessment and

This course is designed to train those who will
teach the 20 hour course required by the Baby-Friendly Hospital
Initiative for training health professionals, educators and staff.
This offering provides a weeklong learning laboratory to assist
participants in mastering the materials, methods and scientific
evidence that form the basis of the 20 Hour Course (as developed by
UNICEF and the World Health Organization, and adapted for the US by
Healthy Children Project). This course is organized around the
concepts, strategies and applications involved in adult learning,
Utilizing these concepts, participants will present sections of the
20 hour course to other participants (topics and materials will be
assigned on-site). In addition, barriers and strategies to
implementing the Ten Steps will be addressed. It is recommended that
learners have a firm understanding of the basic concepts of

Evidence based practice is an emerging model for
objectively examining the validity of common health practices. Its
practice entails careful formulation of the presenting problem,
evaluation of existing knowledge and research regarding treatment
options and integration of new information into practice. This course
explores evidence based clinical practices and provides a framework
for integrating this new paradigm into existing hospital policies and
procedures. Breastfeeding practices and the UNICEF Baby-Friendly
